I wonder how Elvis felt when "Blue Christmas", which he deliberately tried to make sound awful to his mind & ears, ended up being a Christmas classic. He had to have been amused by it.Quote: . . . .
But for many, the star at the top of the tree remains "Elvis' Christmas Album." Released at the height of Presley's fame, it's a must-have for the serious Christmas music fan.
Ironically, the album's biggest hit, "Blue Christmas," was the one track Elvis didn't want to record. As Gordon Stoker, a member of the Jordanaires, the vocal group that backed Presley on that song and many others, recalls, Elvis at first refused to do "Blue Christmas" out of respect for Ernest Tubb, who had had a No. 1 hit with it earlier.
When the producers said he had to cut it, he told folks at the session to come up with something so bad that it would never see the light of day as a single, Stoker told The Associated Press recently from his Nashville home.
"We thought that 'oo-ooo-oooo' was bad enough that they wouldn't release it," Stoker said of the signature backing vocals. To this day, he said, "It still sounds bad to me when I hear it."
Note: The author of this article goofed by mixing up the 1970 release and the original 1957 version of Elvis' Christmas Album. The first sold 9 million copies, the latter only 3 million.

Funny-it was of his best hits, with more fans requesting it etc: and I liked the "OOOOooooOOO" myself. Elvis, bless his heart, admired Ernest Tubb and sisn't want to cut out his recording with one of his own. He was that way about quite a few really good songs done by others, if he had met them on the way up etc:...and they treated him well, he didn't want to undermine their work in any way. I can just hear him saying to come up with something so bad nobody would buy it! As if he could do something sooo badddd...wjh

It's just like Elvis to have more concern for others than himself, and wouldn't you know it came back to him as a blessing as the song he did not want to become successful became successful anyway. When one sows of seed of giving or unselfishness, that seed comes back as a blessing in some form.
On Christmas Eve I had an Elvis related dream. And all through the dream I kept hearing Elvis sing Blue Christmas, only it was w/o the OOOoooOOO background voices.
The dream was about a movie made of Paul McCartney's life. In the movie, though, his admiration of Elvis was such an important part of the movie, that the movie produced many new Elvis fans. I recall that there was a Vegas style impersonator in the move too.
