Sorry I didn't date this but I think it was 65 winter time, might have been 66, not sure. Charlie was living at Graceland-maybe in the basement at that time?)
W. Okay, I think it's stuck on, this is not a good thing-there must be some other way?
E. Don't know, maybe somethin' that plugs in a phone jack-never thought 'bout it.
W. Well, it seems to be okay, the tape is holding.
E. Good idea-tape it down!
W. So what are you doing today?
E. Goin' back to LA tonight-jus' gettin stuff together.
W. you do that yourself-I mean, you don't have somebody pack for you?
E. most of the time-um not helpless, really.
W. I didn't think you were-Really. Just thought you probably didn't pack your own clothes.
E. I can, ya know. Mostly jus' my books, stuff want to be sure goes where I do. Leave the girls here though-got enough of 'em there.
W. Yeah-right! (laughs)
E. (Giggles) don't I though? you seen 'em-can't hardly get in the damn gate! Gawd!
W. I saw that-you could tell them to get lost-couldn't you?
E. An hurt their feelin's! Naw...can't do that, sides it's kina nice bein' welcomed home sometimes. If they didn't show up, man, I'd worry!
W. you are silly! But I guess it would make you wonder if you were losing it!
E. Ain't lost it yet! (Laughs) Jus' a minute-hold on.
W. Okay
E. Cholly, that you? Come 'ere a minute, if you got time.
C. Yeah?
E. I can't get any hot water outta the sink in there-somethin's plugged up maybe?
C. The pipes may be frozen-really cold last night.
E. Go check will ya...gotta get ready an' both of 'em don't work right up here. Man, I gotta shave an' ever thin' an' there's no hot water-liked to froze my ass off tryin' to take a shower! Cholly? (Raises his voice)
C. Yeah?
E. can you do my hair 'fore we go-if there's any hot water?
C. I have hot water-we can do it there.
E. Okay, in a few-check on gettin some up here, please. An close the door, thank you.
E. Man, it was cold here-but if he has hot water I ought to have some up here too-these pipes are old, gawd probably outta get 'em replaced 'fore I wake up swimmin' or something.
W. It gets that cold in Memphis?
E. Yeah, sometimes snows too. It's beautiful when it's fall an' then when it snows. Spring is good too, you all outta live here, you'd love it.
W. It's too humid-we had that in Oklahoma.
E. you'd get used to it.
W. Fraid not-we love California! I love the fact it's so nice all year 'round and there's the beach too. Except the fog is really bad.
E. Yeah can be foggy, especially down at the beach. You all like livin' there, huh?
W. Yep, we sure do! I love going there, but I don't get in the water-I can't swim.
E. (Laughs) me neither much. But I like to play in the water-I got a pool here an' can swim some-just not far-not made for it guess. Get tired easy an' too, don't like it gettin' in my mouth. Cholorine ya know, bad for my hair.
W. Well at least it doesn't make your hair green!
E. It could-if I didn't dye it. Man, I saw some blondes, bleached blondes ya know, they had ruined it goin' in a pool that'd just been cleaned an' cholorinated, ya know? Man, talk about ugly!
W. Jimmie said to tell you hello-he had to go in to work.
E. Okay,...hey Jimbo, um keepin' her home for you! Catch ya later, man.
W. (Laughs) Okkay-if I didn't want to be here-I wouldn't be and you couldn't help it!
E. Stayed home for me, though-huh?
W. No really. You just happened to catch me, I was going to go out the door.
E. Naw...you was waitin'...I know, don't lie.
W. Hey, didn't I have to go get the stick on thing?
E. Okay...so it's not me.
W. Nope-I was going to the store, then pick up Julianne at school and go get some tacos'.
E. I'm not holdin' you up or nothin' cause I can go help fix the pipes.
W. You can fix pipes-have you ever?
E. No, but it can't be too hard.
W. If they are frozen it means they have to be thawed-how would you do it?
E. Blow torch.
W. That could bust them, you know.
E. Well, then they'd have to be replaced so it'd work anyway.
W. What logic!
E. ( Laughs)...um not crazy... (tape runs out)
( I asked him why he didn't use an electric shaver and he said it didn't cut close enough. Charlie comes back, they talk. There is water in the kitchen and in the other end of the house but not upstairs and there is a pipe fitting either clogged with rust or plugged some how. Elvis says call the plumbers and get the whole mess changed to new ones and he'd be down to get his hair done in a few minutes. He says goodbye to me and hangs up.) _________________ Wanda June Hill

As for the blow torches, one better know what they doing when defrosting pipes. Several weeks ago, we had a deep freeze in my area and a man accidentally set his house on fire when trying to defrost his pipes with a blow torch. _________________ Laurie

Thank you, Wanda! Again the same familiar sensation of being there with Elvis and you. I have been missing it! Waiting for "Face To Face", that bit of conversation is a breath.

Great conversation with Elvis, would have loved to have seen him fix those frozen pipes, just not with a blow torch, lethal!
Love the way Wanda and Elvis could tease each other, is how it should be with real friendship! Thanks for sharing as always, Wanda! _________________ Seeks to encourage and inspire! |
