Would like to start a specific thread relating to the gospel songs and what they mean to you particularly specially if one has been of help to you or just because you love the power Elvis conveys through his praise and love of his Lord!
Going for How Great Thou Art, more how Elvis sings it, each note and each word bringing forth his love, faith and beliefs, beautiful and just so powerful!
Would welcome anyone else's feedback, thanks!

Sue I'm so sorry I just now came across this beautiful thread you started a few days ago just now. I was online here just a minute ago, then got booted offline and had to sign back on again. Think maybe that was "a certain someone's" way of getting me to pay attention to this thread?? Anyhow, since you already mentioned one of my favorite Gospel songs that Elvis did "How Great Thou Art", I'll go ahead and mention another one that means alot to me 'Lead Me Guide Me". The song is just so very prayerful to me and I love the way that Elvis and JD and The Stamps harmonize on it so beautifully. Just listening to the first few lyrics of this beautiful song...."Lead me guide me along the way......Lord if you lead me I shall not stray.......Lord just open my eyes that I may see.......Lead me O Lord, won't you lead me?" The very words themselves showed his everlasting faith and trust in the Lord's guidance and uplifts me in the very same way every time I hear it. Thanks for starting such a wonderful thread! |

As I mentioned in a similar type thread in this topic, "Stand By Me" helped me through some dark times. The words and the way Elvis sang them, as if he were resonating with their meaning as well, spoke to what I was going through in a very real way.
I also like very much "You'll Never Walk Alone". That song is sung with such power and beauty and is a reminder that we are never truly alone. I think no matter how alone Elvis may have felt at times, he always knew God was with him. And I believe he wanted to convey that message to us as well. _________________ Laurie

It's impossible to me to pick one as the most special, The one that comes to my mind right now for its sweetness and soft inner joy, for the vibration in Elvis voice expressing so well the intime dialogue of his soul with God... is "In The Garden". I never tire of listening to it. _________________ Amanda Viola

When I read through Laurie's post, the following line came to my mind "...and he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me I am His own...", then I saw Amanda's coice "In the Garden"....and that's it!
And there are so many more, like "I've got confidence", "He touched me" or "Why me, Lord?".These are very special to me! _________________ Christine-Sarena

I haven't seen or heard enough versions of Elvis doing this song to judge, but per the reviews I've read, many consider this, his final performance singing How Great Thou Art, to be his best. How telling that is. His soul shines its brightest when he is physcially the weekest. I wonder if it was because he knew he would be home soon to see his Lord. Or perhaps because he was dying, his connection to the "other side" was even greater, reflecting in the song.
For those that didn't catch the CBS 1977 version of How Great Thou Art in the Spiritual topic, here it is again:
