This is only a small amount of the money that Elvis personally gave away to charities-there is no way to know what amount he "just gave" away to needy people he met, heard about or wanted to do it. Plus he went on drives into the poor sections of Memphis and handed out money to people who looked like they could "use it", and at Christmas and other holidays he went into the black areas where he had friends, and handed out $100 dollar bills to adults, 20's to teens and 10's to small kids. He gave thousands to services who made baskets for the poor-he said those baskets he well remembered coming to their home at holidays and how sometimes, it was all they had for days-it kept us alive, he said, "It's the least I can do, try to give some back." Then there were the hundreds, perhaps thousands of hospital bills he picked up for poor people, friends who couldn't pay, people he just heard about, including the little girl, a birth defect child, who was hospitalized when our daughter was in for a broken elbow for 11 days. To get an idea of what he did for Memphis alone, every year, multiply 17 years by $50,000... and that's just the tip of the "iceberg". Also, Elvis did not take deductions with the IRS for his charities, saying it would not be "in the spirit of true desire to help and would take away the blessing derived from being of service to our fellow humans." I heard that when between pictures and not working, he collected his "unemployment benefits" and immediately gave the money away as he drove around LA looking for those who were poor and down and out. He would go home with out even a dollar and sometimes anyone with him would be "broke" as well. wjh
