I totally support this nomination.

Elvis' movies had a tremendous impact on the youth in this country and also worldwide and they still do, twenty-five years after his death.

I traveled extensively during the 60's, 70's and into the 90's and I never visited a country that the name of Elvis was not recognized. His movies have played in every country in this world and even though his contributions were never recognized by the Academy, his popularity has grown worldwide.

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Science (as a member, I also strongly supported his lifetime achievement awards) has recognized his contributions, both artistically and through his charitable donations.

Please consider this nomination.

Elvis changed the world! He was also a very giving human being with a great spirit. He gave so much love to his fans and gave much to charity. He is my hero and he has always felt like a part of my family. His music (especially his gospel music) has helped me through many losses in my life - and his movies have lifed me up just with his presence - he had it all and I love him!

I think Elvis should receive this honour for more than one reason.
First his music changed the world he gave Rock and Roll a wider platform and the viarety of his musical talents from rock, ballads, rythm and blues, country and love songs. Not many singers can reach that limit and even after 25 years since his death he can still command a spot at the top.
Secondly his generousity to people, charities and donating to hospitals ie teddy bears. Just trying to be honest in his life style which was demanding and full of pressures, which sadly took its toil.
In my opinion Elvis should receive the award.

Allso think Elvis should get recognised for his films too

Postby juliepresleyfan » Thu May 11, 2006 9:21 am

does anyone think Elvis should get a special award for his time in films, i mean ok they might not be oscar material, although id give him a oscar LOL.
but his films i read enabled a lot of other movies we see today to be made , as the money made from the elvis movies helped pay for those to be made i read, so how about it Hollywood , why not recognise The great Actor he was, i said that once in a film group and they just sniggered.
but i believe he was a great actor and could have done more given the chance, dont you, at least he should get a lifetime award or something.
what you think ?

Elvis - An Award

Postby Rainbow Light » Thu May 11, 2006 10:01 am

I wouldn't go so far as to say most of Elvis' movies were worthy of an Oscar but believe he was a good actor and potentially great actor if he'd been given the chance of a really good, dramatic role he could have got his teeth into, so to speak, which I understand is what he really wanted and hoping for.

Don't know so much for films but certainly a Lifetime Achievement Award should go to Elvis for all that he's given, his achievements, triumphs, the awards he received, the charity contributions, records he's received during his life and posthumous record sales - he should be recognised somehow and deserves much more credit and merit than he has otherwise been given down the years that's for sure!

Sue, is there a web site where we can go and make our own supportive comments for Elvis to receive this award?

I do think he deserves some kind of an AWARD for " KING CREOLE" and " JAILHOUSE ROCK" I think he did some FANTASTIC ACTING IN THESE 2 FILMS. I also think if he didn't have the PARKER ROPE AROUND HIS NECK! that he could have been a WONDEFUL ACTOR. He was afford "THE STAR IS BORN" But of course THE COLONIAL SAID NO! Barb!!

Charitable Activities - Benefits-Awards

Postby Wanda June Hill » Sat May 13, 2006 7:09 pm

This is a few that I know about-there were many, many hundreds more over his life time-these were noted -many were not.

1956 -Benefit performance Shreveport, LA-YMCA
1957 Tupelo, Ms -Elvis Presley Park & Youth Center
1961 Ellis Auditorium-Memphis Tenn. benefit the needy.
1961 Bloch Arena -Honolulu, HI. USS Arizona Memorial
1964 Purchased Pres. Rosevelt's yacht "Potomac" and donated it to St. Jude's Hospital, Memphis.
1965 Motion Picture Relief Fund
1966 Christmas Donations totaling $165,000-charities.
1966 Distingushied Service Award Arthrities Foundation
1966 Australia Benevolent Society $149,174 -charities
1971 Memphis Assoc. for Retarded Citizens
1973 Cardiac and Intensive Care Unit Barton Memorial Hospital
1973 Honolulu, HI-Kui Lee Center Fund
1974 Contributions to Handicapped and underprivileged children. Variety Club of California
1975 Dallas Mother's Group Visiualy impaired children
1977 Epilepsy Foundation of Florida
1976 & 1977 Association for Birth Defect Children

1974 United Crebral Palsy (requested no press)
1974 Nevada Society for Aurally Handicapped
1975 North Dallas Mother's Group
1976 & 1977 Association for birth Defect Children-Center for Education, Redlands, California

This is only a small amount of the money that Elvis personally gave away to charities-there is no way to know what amount he "just gave" away to needy people he met, heard about or wanted to do it. Plus he went on drives into the poor sections of Memphis and handed out money to people who looked like they could "use it", and at Christmas and other holidays he went into the black areas where he had friends, and handed out $100 dollar bills to adults, 20's to teens and 10's to small kids. He gave thousands to services who made baskets for the poor-he said those baskets he well remembered coming to their home at holidays and how sometimes, it was all they had for days-it kept us alive, he said, "It's the least I can do, try to give some back." Then there were the hundreds, perhaps thousands of hospital bills he picked up for poor people, friends who couldn't pay, people he just heard about, including the little girl, a birth defect child, who was hospitalized when our daughter was in for a broken elbow for 11 days. To get an idea of what he did for Memphis alone, every year, multiply 17 years by $50,000... and that's just the tip of the "iceberg". Also, Elvis did not take deductions with the IRS for his charities, saying it would not be "in the spirit of true desire to help and would take away the blessing derived from being of service to our fellow humans." I heard that when between pictures and not working, he collected his "unemployment benefits" and immediately gave the money away as he drove around LA looking for those who were poor and down and out. He would go home with out even a dollar and sometimes anyone with him would be "broke" as well. wjh

Elvis, a humanitarian

Postby Blue Moon » Sat May 13, 2006 8:53 pm

I mentioned this on another post, but it's worth repeating again......."The Best of Elvis" by Cindy Hazen & Mike Freeman is a 198 page book devoted totally to the humanitarian side of Elvis. Worthwhile reading. Out of print, but can be gotten used. See Maia's recommended reading links.

Thanks Laurie, I haven't read that book-or even seen it I guess since I haven't been out of my shell for a while.
I know that he was so generous, sometimes to a fault and he'd go back out and work some more to make his father happy. There was a lot of money coming in, most people could have lived well and only worked once or twice a year, but Elvis continued to pay his workers year around-and take them and their families on free vacations when he'd go... small wonder his daddy was "after him" so much about spending his money. It just meant fun to Elvis, making people happy, doing things to see them smile... and he never saved anything it seemed. Not til the last few years did he start trying to put money in a savings account but it was all gone but for a few hundred dollars when he died. I think he used it for what ever it was he "had to do" there at the end, to save Graceland etc; and leave his child with something. He made billions, and ended up owing back taxes! More than his estate was worth. Crazy but he sure had fun and he made a lot of his fellow humans happy, better off and he's still doing it. Bless his poor little ol' heart! wjh
