Auction sale for Elvis items - old but good news:

Postby Rainbow Light » Sat Jul 22, 2006 2:39 pm

I don't care for them keep calling Elvis The King as there was only one King to him: The King of Kings but bearing in mind it was for charity, gonna let just this one pass for now.

The King of all auctions

Las Vegas hosts another Elvis show - an auction of his belongings.

More than 2,000 personal items belonging to the King of Rock 'n' Roll Elvis Presley destined for a charity auction have gone on show on the Internet.
The sale itself will take place in Las Vegas in October, but Internet users can both view lots and submit 'e-bids' from 6 September.

The proceeds from lots such as the King's "little black book" and the front doors keys to his opulent Graceland mansion will go to help the homeless in Memphis, Tennessee.

Is this on? Elvis's engraved gold mic is up for grabs.
Lisa-Marie Presley, heir to the King's estate and vast merchandising empire, has thrown open the family vaults for the sale.

Included in the auction are items from Elvis's childhood, his rise to stardom and the final years before his death in 1977.

Fans intrigued by the young star's academic abilities can bid for his sixth-grade school report card. A poor maths student, Presley unsurprisingly scored an A in music.

Among the other documents on offer are his army draft card, a pay stub from his $50-a-week job with the Precision Tool Company and his first recording contract.

For those looking for something a little more impressive, a 1970 Mercedes limo and a 1972 Cadillac station wagon are also up for grabs.

Elvis had a flare for picking stage costumes
Elvis's wardrobe has been raided for the special sale. Alongside an array of stage costumes in the catalogue, such as a black leather jumpsuit and a karate jacket complete with tiger motif, are more personal items.

Lot C51 matches a monogrammed red satin pillow case with a pair of black 'satin-like' pyjamas.

Also on offer is the army fatigue uniform wore when in 1958 heart-throb Elvis the Pelvis became Private Presley E.A. 53310761, the US Army's most famous GI.

One of the strangest lots in the sale is a Walther PPk pistol, the type made famous by James Bond. The weapon has its famous owners name engraved on the silver barrel.

The King is dead - but he's still giving
The handle of the gun is embossed with a silver medallion showing his trademark saying 'TBC' - Taking Care of Business. The singer was buried with a ring bearing the same inscription.

The auction of such rare and valuable items is intended to honour the late star's "spirit of generosity", according to daughter Lisa-Marie.

"My father never once forgot what it was like to want, to need, to do without. He spent most of his life bringing happiness to others, endlessly giving to those around him."

The auction proceeds will help build Presley Place. Families will be able to live rent free in the complex, with access to child care and job training.

Auction

Postby Wanda June Hill » Sat Jul 22, 2006 3:37 pm

It hurts to see any of this things auctioned off-it's like one more "nail in the coffin" kind of thing that means he is gone...but we know that he is and it will go toward helping people in need and he would be all for that-look at what he gave away...even his life. So his daughter is following her daddy's example and I'm sure she has been selective... those things are mostly not really personal...just things he had, did and once owned. He enjoyed it all and he wouldn't care. Heck he probably would have already done so were he alive! Lord knows what he'd just toss away...too. Though he tended to keep everything because who knows, he might need the stuff some day, he could always sell it. I heard that once or twice. Anyway, I wish them well and to get buckets of cash for the things...so far he's out sold everyone when it came to his "things" going up for grabs. Except I think Marilyn...and that would be okay for him...I mean he gave up the cover of TV guide when his special was airing because Ann M had one coming out about the same time! And he felt "the lady should have the honor" and he wanted her to have the attention it would bring her show, because after all, he didn't need it-he would get enough as it was. He was right, he didn't. But we know that wasn't his "real" reason. wjh

I could have sworn I read somewhere that Elvis said he did not get good grades in music - because never learned to read music. Instead, he picked up music from his inner being, his soul. Well maybe he was referring to his high school music grades.

YES ELVIS WOULD BE VERY PROUD OF LISA FOR GIVING THE MONEY TO THE HOMELESS, BUT SOME OF THEM THINGS LIKE HIS REPORT CARD I WOULD THINK LISA WOULD KEEP, AND LIKE SOME OF HIS CLOTHES. BUT I GUESS SHE IS DOING IT FOR A VERY GOOD AND WORTHY CAUSE. FAIRYTALE!!
WITHOUT A SONG THE DAY WOULD NEVER END, WITHOUT A SONG A MAN AIN'T GOT A FREIND, WITHOUT A SONG. SO I KEEP ON SINGING A SONG.

YES, AS LONG AS THAT'S THE CASE THAT'S FINE. BELIEVE SHE WANTS TO KEEP MEMORIES FOR HERSELF AS PRIVATE AND THAT'S MORE THAN FAIR ENOUGH!

Thanks for bringing this topic back around Sue. :D It is really sad to me to see some of his things "piece mealed" and sold off like this, but since the money did go to charity I know that El'vis is proud of his little girl for following in his extremely generous footsteps. :D Like Wanda said, were he alive he probably would have already done so himself. I agree with Wanda also in the fact that by these things being sold it just reaffirms the fact that he is gone. What brings joy to my heart though is that fact that he is not nor will he ever be forgotten!!! :D

Yes, I feel that this is true; it is sad that the items had to be auctioned off in this manner :( yet in the spirit of charity it can be accepted and as you say, Mari, it shows Elvis will never be forgotten and always loved! :D

I know that Lisa is giving the proceeds to charity and God bless her for that. I am just very surprised that Priscilla never set anything up so that a portion of the profits made from the tours of the house go to charity. That way Lisa doesn't need to sell her dad's things. Heaven knows that with Graceland being the second most visited place in the US, EPE certainly makes enough money to give a portion to charity.

AMEN, Laura! Have to say I'm somewhat surprised about that and it shouldn't have to come to Lisa Marie selling her Dad's things, I'm sure they're precious to Lisa as well! :)
