How Elvis deepened my own faith

Postby presleyslave » Fri Aug 04, 2006 1:28 pm

I have loved Elvis since I was a child of about 6 or 7 years of age. Even then I knew there was something special about him that I couldnt' understand as a child. I do remember though that it was something in his smile that touched my inner self. As I grew older and matured I went through different phases where Elvis was not a constant in my life but was always in the background, pretty much like my own Catholic faith. Howver when my beloved father died in 2002 I was distraught and very deeply grief-stricken. A few months after his death I went to see an Elvis tribute show and something inside me was stirred profoundly. I started to buy every book I could get my hands on about Elvis and also began to expand my C.D collection. Since that day I haven't looked back. Reading about Elvis' deep spirituality and faith made me realise what was missing in my life and myself and my husband and daughter began to go to Mass again every Sunday as a family. I used to go to Mass every Sunday with my own father, as my mother sang in the choir and I have such lovely memories of being with my Dad in church. It has enriched our family life and made Sunday a special day again. I am now a regular reader at Mass in our local church and feel so close to God again. I credit Elvis with leading me back to where I belong and his beautiful voice, face and music give me so much joy that I cannot express the love I feel for him strongly enough. Thank you Elvis for your powerful spirit.

I liked your post. I also was a child when he really "touched" my life.

I fell in love with him just hearing his voice and then I saw that beautiful man on every frontpage. Sadly it was 16th of August.

I learned english at a very young age, just to keep up with everything there was to read.

Becoming a teenager, Elvis and his films and books stayed in my life but at that moment "my boyfriend" was more important.

Then I married and became a mother of two lovely daughters and at that moment he was full time back in my life.

During my pregnancy his records were there every day and when my kids were born they became calm on his music (they were used to hear it).

In 1997 I went to Graceland, and it was a special feeling. I have been there once and that is enough because I still feel the pain, the hurt I felt being there standing at his grave and realise really for the very first time that he really was "gone".

It was indeed beautiful there and special and all but not like I expected it to be.

He just wasn't there. I realised he would never come down those beautiful stairs anymore, he just would not swim and laugh in that pool anymore.

i saw the horses walking and I just saw him in my head walking to them holding his little girl by the hand and they went feeding the horses.

I realised it all was gone and being in Memphis I suffered a nervous breakdown and when my husband went to Nashville I stayed in my hotelroom and cried for the whole day.

Being back, I never liked to speak about Memphis again. it still makes me cry. My feelings are I came, I saw, I went. For me Memphis was not FUN. It was sad.

Such a beautiful life that went to pieces there. Such a talent waisted. It never should have happened , not that way. Not at that age.

Now he isn't out of my life, never again. No day goes by whitout thinking, hearing or seeing him.

I know my husband thinks I just love Elvis too much but that's who I am, take it or leave it.

He will be part of my life until the day I die. And I hope to finally meet him there in the afterlive.

Thank you all for your replies. I will be going to Graceland next year, I hope I will find it an uplifting experience. I am sorry to hear that for one of you it was a sad experience, bur sometimes sadnes brings us closer to our inner selves and we gain strength from it. I hope if you ever return it will be different for you and it's true Elvis is with you always and I believe he was ready to go back to his maker. He was so tired and I believe he was prepared. The book found in his bathroom that he was reading when he died was called The Search for the Face of Christ, so he was still seeking even at the moment of death. What a wonderful legacy to leave us, to never stop searching and learning!

Elvis' gospel songs help and his whole character and example. While not a saint, yet a beautiful spirit and did his very best to live the Christian life-style. Also, just being here at ELC and sensing the Love, Tranquility and deep sense of spirituality here, has helped so much too, thanks Maia & Wanda, specially Maia for starting ELC out!!! :D :D

With lots of Love,

Sue

I WAS LISTENIN TO ELVIS'S GOSPEL JUST TODAY, AND I COULD JUST FEEL THE LORDS LOVE, AND HIS HAND ON MY HEART. I COULD ALSO FEEL ELVIS'S WARMTH IN MY HEART TO! FAIRYTALE!
WITHOUT A SONG THE DAY WOULD NEVER END, WITHOUT A SONG A MAN AIN'T GOT A FREIND, WITHOUT A SONG. SO I KEEP ON SINGING A SONG.

Such an enlightening and uplifting thread you've brought back around Sue. :D Thanks so much for doing this. :D Elvis indeed does have such a very powerful spirit. :D One that can so easily touch us all with God's PURE LOVE AND LIGHT. :D I too echo your lovely statements Presleyslave in that Elvis will most definitely be a part of my life until the day I die when I too will hopefully be able to see him in Heaven and thank him for all of the love and joy he has brought into so many people's lives. :D
