Me thinks Mother Nature doesn't always do the right thing when it comes to cats and dogs and their off spring. Cats especially began to have illnesses that they pass to their kittens who if they don't die from it right away, in turn pass it to theirs and so on and on...it's hard to have to come to grips with it, but cats and dogs need to be spayed and neutered. Humans have made it too easy for animals in that we feed them etc: and so instead of having young just when food is available and not when it isn't, they just keep having young until the kittens/puppies start being weak and get sick while very young. Life is tough, humans have to step up to help Mother Nature since we've screwed with it so much it's all messed up these days. I hope your "stray" will get spayed and those kittens as well-otherwise you might end up with 27 cats at your door-yelling feed me-in less than 2 years time too. Could happen. Female cats can have kittens at just 5 months old. Usually the kittens don't live when the mother is so young-but sometimes they do. I speak from experience. wjh

Yes Wanda, this I have been doing for many, many years, with surgery for the females tying up their tromps after a first -sometimes a second motherhood- in a way they maintained their instint but could not get pregnant. I have given away many, many puppies, after interviewing lots of people to be sure they were the right ones to have them...

I don't know what happens this time that I don't feel like intervening as I did before. It comes from inside, like a mandate... It's very strange...

it really is difficult to give them away Amanda you are right, besides too early I think..but I too, neutered all the female cats around, including my Fish kittie..because it is risky for babies as well when their mother tries to change their places, carrying them one by one and sometimes lose one of them, or male cats kill them and mothers, with each birth they lose a lot physically so I do intervene mother nature willingly..and yes ,even in their 5th month they can have babies.. :(

Right, I hope people will pass the bill in Ca. that will require dogs and cats to be fixed and breeders to have less animal births-there are so many, many lost and strayed animals out here. My daughter is now doing what I used to do-pick them up, bring them home and try to find their owners and then having to turn them in to shelters where it's anyone's guess if they get adopted or not. Just two days ago she found one a few blocks from here on her way to work at 5:30am. A little dog, very cute, nutered, obviously a "carpet dog" with soft pads, loved and cared for but nearly run over by a car. She stopped traffic to get him-brought him to us and Jimmie and I drove about 100 miles to two shelters and the last one the owner had called that morning having lost him. He lived just a few streets from us-she had adopted him just a few weeks ago. Stranger things happen, like Elvis telling about finding a little dog in the desert with a maynaise jar stuck on it's head-rescuing it, breaking the glass that he used his shirt to wrap so he could try to control the broken pieces and not hurt the dog's eyes-and gave the little thing water and a home for life with him. Just luck he stopped to use the "john" he said-otherwise he'd not have seen the movement or the sun reflecting off the glass. It was very hot out there, he said even though it was early morning. They were on the way to Memphis, I think he said-or coming back from there-can't remember now. Anyway he saved him-and many others. Even used some of his dogs in a couple of movies-one being Stay Away Joe. And the one he did with Michelle Carey...and the big Great Dane. I think some were in Trouble With Girls also-just running around loose. They looked like the same ones in Stay Away Joe...don't know for sure. And I think it was some of his dogs in the Helicopter movie-that machine was in the film more than he was! It's a Dog's Life routine.

There sure should be a bill passed as to know there are so many animals running around stray or lost because of too many animal births is very sad

To read of Elvis' typical response to an animal in need of rescue is so very touching, thank you Wanda for sharing this!

Recently a bill or law was approved in Spain regarding that question. Also for mistreating animals. Yet, I suppose it is not easy to have total control. I had to take charge of many, many lost animals, some of them sick or beaten or hurt. The shelters don't want them if you have space to keep them yourself.

Love to know about that tender story of Elvis and that dog and his endessly love for animals. :)

I agree 100% on a bill needing to be passed because it is indeed very sad to know that there are so many precious little animals running around stray or lost due to their being too many animal births. :( Wanda it was very touching to read about Elvis's typical loving response to an animal in need and I'd like to thank you too for sharing this with us. :)
