FAMOUS CHRISTIAN'S - ELVIS PRESLEY
Elvis has been dubbed the Entertainer of the Century. A title so duly deserved that it would be a crime to bestow it upon anyone else. However, a title so highly regarded, that hundreds of entertainers have not even stepped foot into the shadow of such and immense crown.

Elvis was more than an entertainer, though. He was first and foremost, a man. A man from humble beginnings, and a role model for everyone. We see the person on stage, wearing a sequined suit, and singing beautiful songs, the rest of us fall in love with. The Elvis we see, wasn't the man, but the legend. The man was humble, polite, and modest. For those, that never knew Elvis, or heard about his off stage life; it is more a testament of his faith and love for God that we remember the most about him, even though sometimes we don't truly see that.

Raised in an Assembly of God church in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis was the son of Vernon and Gladys Presley. His brother, Jesse Garon, was stillborn, something Elvis would never forget. He often wondered why God had allowed his brother to die and not him. It was perhaps this thought that kept Elvis as humble as he was--knowing that God could have easily allowed him to die instead.

When he was a boy, Elvis often dreamed of becoming famous. He prayed to God that He would allow him to have a lot of money one day so he could buy his parents and new house and car. Elvis was even at an early age, very generous. His father, Vernon, told a story of how he would give away his toys to other children who didn't have any. Elvis, of course, didn't have much of his own, but whenever he did he always put others above himself. This kind of love and generosity would stick with him for the rest of his life.

Elvis during his music career and over the course of his lifetime gave away more than he ever spent on himself. He truly knew the majesty of giving rather than receiving. He received many awards and had tons of accolades heaped upon him for his overwhelming love of his fellow man.

During the latter years of Elvis's life, he grew even hungrier for God and His Spirit. Spending many hours reading books, the Bible, and other sources of information to have a deeper and more personal understanding of God.

Perhaps the most telling aspect of Elvis's incredible faith in God was how he lived his life. Giving of himself and giving to others while asking nothing in return. Elvis had gained the fame of millions, and yet he stilled humbled himself before the Almighty God. That is something few of us could ever do. Elvis is not an idol and not even a hero. He's been a living example of the Living God, who can take nothing and make it into something.

Thank you, Christ's Kingdom Church for acknowledging Elvis as a loving, caring and generous Christian soul! :D

Elvis never failed to give of himself in any capacity whether it be with his money or his time and he ALWAYS gave from his beautiful heart with nothing expected in return. :D He truly epitomized the meaning of Christ-like LOVE!! :D A definite role model FOR SURE!!! :D My thanks also to Christ's Kingdom Church for acknowledging Elvis's loving, caring and generous soul and showing the wonderful man that existed within the legend! :D

I loved the line that said Elvis was so richly deserving of the title Entertainer of the Century that it would be a crime to bestow it on anyone else. I agree wholeheartedly!

While that accolade is undoubtedly deserved, I think Elvis would be more pleased to show up on the "famous Christians" list. That outward persona of the ultimate showman was probably his best acting job -- to go out on stage, always nervous, and put on the best show he could so people who had spent their hard-earned money for a ticket wouldn't be disappointed. And to come across as so confident and in-control. The one exception that immediately comes to mind was the rehearsal concert for Aloha From Hawaii when, near the end, Elvis tells everyone that the show would be broadcast all over the world the next night "and I need all the help I can get."

From Wanda JH's stories, he obviously felt blessed to have achieved what he did and always downplayed his immense popularity and talent. I've read that he earned more than $4 billion in his lieftime and gave about half of that away. And he gave not to buy someone's love but simply to put a smile on their faces and do something unexpected. I saw a review of his gospel albums that said that Elvis made no secret of the fact that that's where his heart and soul lay. He wasn't ashamed of his faith. And when people told him he couldn't do gospel music (Ed Sullivan, Col. Parker, all the critics that said you can't do gospel in Vegas), he didn't care. He did it because he loved it and it was his way of bringing God's love to people. Larry Geller in his book tells a story of a time when he told Elvis of a woman who was on the verge of committing suicide but didn't because she was touched by his gospel songs. Elvis was very moved and told Larry that's what it's all about -- God and sharing joy and love with others.

I hope the day comes soon when the Elvis described on the Christian website is the Elvis that everyone knows. I think the stories told by so many who knew the real Elvis are finally making in-roads in the old perception because so many people haven't heard them before. And the same-old same-old from the MM, I think, is starting to fall on deaf ears. They're starting to sound like they are the ones who didn't know him. Sort of minimizes their roles in Elvis's life. They aren't on the same par as Elvis, and they aren't the people who knew him and cared for him. Fortunately there are other people who did who have maybe kept quiet because they didn't want to be seen as cashing in on him the way the MM did. So finally the truth comes out! :D

One last comment on Elvis's faith. I've heard he didn't mind being called the King of Rock and Roll, but when people called him simply "the King," he took exception to it and would politely tell them that Jesus was the King; he himself was just an entertainer. God bless him.

This was really refreshing to read.
After reading a few articles from some Christian leaders who have trashed Elvis, here is one which sees clearly that
He truly knew the majesty of giving rather than receiving.

Elvis had gained the fame of millions, and yet he stilled humbled himself before the Almighty God.

He's been a living example of the Living God
Laurie

It behooves one to sense God as dwelling within each of us, rather than as some distant entity, far above and seemingly beyond our reach.

Yes thank you! So many have trashed him, so many who say they are Christians and sadly, they fall much shorter that he ever did at being a "Christian" in the sense of that word. Elvis never pointed a finger at anyone to lay blame on them or to put them down for whatever they might think or do. He might not like it but he would reach out to help them get back on track-never would he stomp on them verbably in public for all to see. I know that he would now be crying, humbled by the article written about him, a nobody, just a singer and from the wrong side of the tracks and this person of importance, a Christian organization would say these kind things about him? It would break his heart but he would be filled with hope and joy too. He said sometimes joy can feel so much like sorrow in that it wrings the heart right up inside a man. I had a bit of trouble understanding that remark but I learned, after knowing him more, what he meant. He was right. Joy can do that...especially when it is coming from an unexpected source...That article written about Elvis the man, would have done it for him. It did it for me too.
Thank you very much for placing it on here for all to see.

:D :D

Having read in Larry's book of how much it meant to Elvis to have his spiritual search acknowledged, that he'd matured spiritually in his search and have those he was associated with in various aspects, see this in him, I hope and believe that Elvis would have been touched by the above tribute too!
