Elvis - A Lighted Candle

1965- late fall.
W. And you are doing what?
E. Talkin' to you...
W. Okay. Is it starting to be cold back there?
E. Back where?
W. Memphis
E. No...skies clear, stars out 'n just kind nice but might rain tomorrow.
W. We have stars also-for a change-no fog.
E. Wish I was at the beach-havin' a party or somethin' interesting...run out of things to do seems like.
W. How many records do you have?
E. (snickers) Maybe thousand or so...don't know.
W. I heard some thing about you the other day.
E. What now?
W. Oh you made a donation in town, something about giving money to an old folks home.
E. Gawd-where'd you hear that?
W. Is it true?
E. (Silence)
W. It wasn't in the newspaper-our neighbors have relatives who live in Memphis.
E. Oh-it wasn't here either-eh-it wasn't much; just heard that some of 'em were tryin' to get something started an' seemed like a good idea. We didn't have a car-that'd run sometimes 'n man, it was no fun tryin' to get 'round ya know.
W. It was very nice of you and whether you like it or not, you're a nice guy.
E. No-just needed to get rid of some money---
W. Uh-huh...you lie like a rug too...
E. (Laughs) yeah? Do huh? A persian rug...you ever see a real one of them 'n walk on it?
W. Probably not, is it nice?
E. They're hand made ya know, women do it by hand...(snickers) that sounds dirty, don't it? I meant they-what do they call it-weave-you know, like they make cloth only it's with yarns and so forth. The real ones are wool, made from fine wool and all by hand-spin the wool into yarn an all that. Knew someone had some in their house-very pretty but wouldn't want 'em 'cause I like wall to wall carpet.
W. I heard you had white carpet-is that true?
E. yeah-makes the house look bigger...'n clean too.
W. I wouldn't want to have to keep it clean.
E. People come out an' do it....
W. I heard you rode your motorcycle inside a time or two.
E. ( Laughs) Yeah- daddy said I couldn't bring that in here-so I showed him it would go through the door an' come in jus' fine. (Giggles) Liked to had a fit over that one so jus' parked it in the livin' room.
W. You are bad!
E. Huh! I'm Fun! (Snickers)

What a wonderful sense of humor he had---riding his bike into and then parking it in the living room. :lol:

I just love it!!

You were also right on the money when you said to him"whether you like it or not, you're a nice guy."

He definitely was that for sure!

Speaking of him being nice, I was just wondering, did he not like being known as that or for being a nice guy? I'm asking because I know in your book he said[about you telling him that you might write a book about him] "just don't make me sound too nice because I'm not." Your book is wonderful by the way!!

I enjoy it so much each time I read it!!

Elvis' humility shines through as always, never wanting to make a big deal of his giving.

Riding his motorcycle on the white carpet! Lord, I can just imagine Vernon throwin' a fit over that one. Guess one would have to be careful and think twice before telling Elvis something could not be done.

I loved that silence after you asking if what you heard was true, Wanda. One can feel him thinking quickly how it got known... And then:

I have a thing on old persian rugs too. The designs in them have a sacred geometry that works to create a field of energy. I got a secondhand one (they are very expensive) many years ago and I have it in my living room, a little worn out by now, but I love it.
