I wonder whether you can help me out here - I noticed a piece of jewelry in these beautiful pictures from 76. What looks like a coin on a leather strap? Do you have any idea what that is, and if yes, what it means?

Hi Ingrid, I take it that you are referring to the one highest up around his neck with the large round medailan and some beads on each side with knots separating them all? I can only say what he told me-that Lisa gave him that, it is a Karate thing I believe, as it has a fist on it from what I could tell when I looked at it closer in pictures and then when I last saw him and he was pretty close and wearing it. I believe he meant it when he said when asked if he was going to wear that same necklace the entire 1976 year as he had it on constantly-that if the "cord rots, I'll have it fixed and she can tie it on again." So I think it was his little girl who gave that to him and must have put it on him also. He wore it at every concert he did that year-from the time he got it until it was over. Off stage as well. I guess it was like his wedding ring, he would wear it when she was going to be with him because he said, "she likes seein' me wear it on account of her momma got it for me." He was trying to give her "roots" and be a "family" even though they were not together much as one...though they did do family things, birthdays, etc: together and got along for Lisa's sake. That's all I know Ingrid. I haven't heard anything else about it from anyone who might know more concerning the "coin looking medailion". wjh

Thank you Wanda!!! THAT is the pendant you´re talking about in your book (page 221, 2006 edition), when you describe what he looked like when you interviewed him.

It was really sweet of him to wear his daughter´s gift. Somehow I hope she´s got it back... the signs of wear and tear on that little thing reflect a father´s love!

At least that´s my interpretation, I´m a "daddy´s girl", too!

Me too, I wish I had asked him about it-I think it was an award kind of thing and it was made into a necklace so he could wear it but I don't know for sure about that. Whatever, he sure wore the thing for along time-it was in a knot I think he said and wouldn't go over his head so he must have showered etc: in it too as he said, if it rots I'll have it re strung and she could tie it back on him. I don't think somehow, he'd have worn anything that long and that "simple" if she was not the one who gave it to him. Not him, he wore Linda's necklace-the cross one for a long time after she gave it to him also. So he was wearing both of them at the same time on stage but he also wore the Karate fist one off stage during that time too. wjh
