(Excerpt from young lady, letter received in July 78 after hearing me on radio show. I said that everyone who had the good fortune to meet Elvis or spend time with him, had a duty to write their memories of him down so that they would be there for all those people who would never have that chance now- at least they could read about what it might have been like and see how he was with other people. She took me seriously and wrote a long letter- this is just an excerpt that I think is so typical Elvis.)

Excerpt: Sandi Whiplash (maiden name)
I was lucky, my folks had a nice place in South Memphis and one of the neighbors had a son who was a musician and Elvis came over to visit him a few times. One of those times I was visiting that son's sister and got to meet Elvis too. He asked me if I'd go out with him and I did; from then on my sister insisted I call her every night because she was worried as I was "running around with a rock and roll star with a "reputation" One of the funniest things that happened on a "date" with him was in regards to my calling her.
I was on the phone with my sister when he came back from where ever he had been with his buddies and I waved at him but continued talking as he was going to shower and get ready to go to bed. It was about 2 am and she was up because she left for work at 3:30 and worked until around 1 pm and that's why I called her so early.
Elvis came out of the bathroom, I asked if he wanted to have a snack before bedtime and he shook his head, but didn't look at me. I asked if he felt okay (he was prone to have bad headaches), he mumbled something and lay with his back toward me; I slipped under the covers and cuddled up to him. He didn't say anything, didn't move. I said are you comfortable? He mumbled yea, but he wasn't acting normal, usually he was loving and turned to hold me and loved to cuddle. I said, Ok what is wrong? What did I do, sugar?" He said nothing. "Elvis, what is it-if I don't know I can't do anything to make it up! He lay there. I got up and went around to his side of the bed, he shut his eyes. I said, Sugar if you don't tell me I'm going to cry! He looked up with such sad eyes and said, "You told her you were gettin' rid of sugar...did you mean me?
I said, No, why did you think that? He said, "You call me Sugar..." and his eyes welled in tears before he looked away. Well, it's a good thing he has a big bed...there was plenty of room on his side! Me-give up my Sugar! No way!

Thank you Wanda for sharing Sandi's touching letter. Do you know about what year she was talking? I was just wondering Elvis' age.

Have just re-read this, adorable and yet so poignant, poor baby! Elvis thinking Sandi meant him as she'd called him 'Sugar', he's so very precious!!
