Muhammad Ali Gives Praise To Elvis On His Birthday!!!

From USA Today:

Today on Muhammad's birthday he was asked what brings him the most pleasure in life and he responded that watching his old fights was one of them and the other great pleasure that makes him happy is watching Elvis'

"He watches film of a lot of his old fights," said Phoenix businessman Jimmy Walker, who has grown close to him in the 13 years since he founded Ali's annual fundraiser, Fight Night, in the battle against Parkinson's.

"He watches Rocky and he listens to Elvis; I always hear Elvis in the background. He really likes Elvis a lot."

As told by Ali:

"Few years ago, Elvis came to my training camp in Pennsylvania, stayed two weeks. Nobody knew about it. One night I said, 'Elvis, do me a favor. I got a guitar.

Please come with me down to Pottsville, little town nearby, this redneck place called Spoonies.'
I called the owner, told him to let us come in the back door.

It was Saturday night, dancin' inside. Elvis went up to the mike, towel over his face, took it off" - and here Ali imitates - "'You ain't nothin' but a hound dog, cryin' all the time.'

Then we flew out the door again. Can you imagine bein' in a little one-horse town and Elvis Presley runs on stage?

Man, people ran all outta the place lookin', gettin' in cars, tryin' to find us. Elvis said 'Champ, I've never done that before in my life'."

Yeah, Elvis and Ali met some time earlier-Elvis was training to do the boxing movie and he wanted to "get it right" of course-he went to a gym in LA and they met there I think-but now would not swear it was that gym but yes he did go to Ali's training camp and was there to learn boxing-he also showed Ali how to do some karate so that it would help him be as Elvis put it, "more stable" through out his body, aligned properly and give him more of a reach and strength behind it-speed is everything he said, in boxing as well as hand to hand combat...if you move to fast you'll over extend or under and if you move to slow you'll get nailed...so he said there were things that karate taught you that were vital for balance...and so they shared techniques. Ali said they were the two prettiest men alive and since Elvis was gone, he was the only one left and he had to carry on-similiar to what James Brown said-only he wasn't one of the "prettiest men" except maybe to his loved ones. Only Evel Kenevel and Ali are left of the original pretty boy "heros" of our time...cry,cry,cry...wjh

Thank you Zey, for bringing that anecdote about Elvis and Mohamed Ali. It is new to me. I only knew about that time they met in Elvis' dressing room. It's so nice to know that Elvis meant so much to Ali. :)

of course it's because of techincs, not being Ali or Elvis but there's nothing much to do with just boxing, against a martial art master..it's really a mystery that how those techniques invented in far east..amazing and it's much more a spiritual education than fighting..
