In one of the many books that I have read and reread, Elvis was really shaken when Dr. King was murdered and he was also angry and ashamed that it happened in Memphis. He believed that the world at large might look at Dr. King being killed on that day in Memphis by some bigot or racist, and that Memphis would be judged by the action of the killer.
Elvis cared deeply about all people and he tried so hard to find the positive in all people. I am proud of Elvis for recording that song at that time. America was not in a good place and the song expressed what Elvis felt and he sang it even though Parker did not want 'his boy' as he called Elvis, to record any song that actually had a message within its words.
The song said what was needed to be said and I know that my heart felt lighter the first time I heard Elvis sing "If I Can Dream."

I just got done watching The Skeleton Key, a 2005 strange voodoo/hoodoo mystery movie which takes place in the bayous around New Orleans, and has a surprise ending.

Too my pleasant surprise, the ending song was Elvis' If I can Dream.

Yet another example of that song recently being played to the public. Both the singer and the song are not going to be forgotten. And I think it is no coincidence that "If I can Dream" is receiving more attention than say 10 years ago. Elvis sang that song with such passion, straight from his heart, and the words are such an important message for humanity now. We need to believe and act on those words now, before it is too late.
