Juanico, author of a new memoir, ``Elvis: In the Twilight of Memory'' (Arcade Publishing; $25.95), blames his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, for encouraging Presley to go out with beautiful women for the publicity. ``But Elvis did not have to go along with him, so I can't totally blame the colonel for making me bow out because Elvis had a part in it, too,'' she said on the phone from her home in Biloxi.

Priscilla Beaulieu Presley, the only woman to get Elvis to the altar, has described herself during her time with Elvis as ``crazed with worry'' about other women, particularly Ann- Margret, who became involved with the singer after he had proposed to Priscilla.

Although others have snickered at Priscilla's claim that they didn't sleep together until their wedding night, it sounds credible to Juanico. ``I doubt Elvis was sleeping with those showgirls, either. The colonel had told him, `For God's sake, don't get anyone pregnant' -- and Elvis wouldn't go against the colonel.''

There were several close calls, but Juanico swears that she never had sex with Presley. ``I was tempted to, oh, yeah. But I was a virgin and the times were different back then. If he didn't put the brakes on, I would. There was one time when neither of us was putting any brakes on that his mom knocked on the door.'' Without that knock, ``Who knows? June might have had those little babies,'' she adds, laughing.

The only time she ever really regretted having abstained was in 1969, when Juanico, by then married and the mother of two, saw Presley perform in Las Vegas. ``My heart was racing just seeing him up onstage. I felt like tearing his pelvis off. I was no longer so innocent, and I thought, ``What do I have to lose?' ''

Ann-Margret also has described a Vegas encounter with Presley -- but in her case, she says, he was the one filled with longing. He phoned her after she opened a show in 1972 to say he was lonely and to ask if he could spend the night. Married by then to Roger Smith, Ann-Margret says she told him, ``You know I can't.''

She had met Presley in 1964, when they made ``Viva Las Vegas'' together. They instinctively knew each other's moves. They would slither around his living room like cats, with Elvis growling, ``You got me running,'' and Ann-Margret responding, ``You got me hidin.' ''

While it's generally thought that they had a hot and heavy romance during the filming, which gives ``Viva Las Vegas'' its oomph, Ann-Margret is coy about whether they ever were intimate. She acknowledges that he had a round pink bed made for her because he knew she loved pink, but won't say if they spent any time in it.

``What we had was very strong and real intense. I knew him very, very well. We were so much alike,'' she told The Chronicle three years ago when her autobiography, ``Ann-Margret: My Story,'' came out with a chapter devoted to Elvis.

So many women, famous and not, have been linked to Presley that you wonder how he found time to have a career. Cybill Shepherd has confirmed in interviews that she dated him in 1972, when his marriage to Priscilla was in its final stage. A friend who knew Shepherd from Memphis called and said the singer wanted to meet her and invited her to a private screening. When the movie started, everyone on one side of her slid down a seat and Presley, dressed all in white, plopped down next to her.

``He was gorgeous then, and I didn't look bad either,'' she has recalled.

Other celebrities linked with Presley include Natalie Wood, Connie Stevens, Monique Van Vooren and Nancy Sinatra, who was rumored to be seeing him during his wife's pregnancy. Bookstores practically have a subsection under Presley for memoirs by women who claim to have had affairs with him.

Cassandra Peterson says she knew him for only one night -- and all they did was talk. As her campy persona, Elvira, she has introduced horror movies on TV and starred in a feature film, ``Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.'' But in 1969, when she says the rendezvous with Presley took place, Peterson was one of those Vegas showgirls he seemed to favor.

Her girlfriend, who knew Presley's money manager, got them invited to a party in Presley's suite. ``I think because I was so young -- just 17 compared to the other showgirls, who were in their 30s -- Elvis kind of singled me out,'' Peterson says. ``I sat at the piano and he played songs for me. He told me I should get out of Vegas because if I didn't I would become like the other, older showgirls.''

He showed her a jewel-encrusted belt buckle -- a present, he said, from President Richard Nixon. ``It was the biggest, gaudiest thing I had ever seen, and he was just so thrilled with it, like he was a little kid,'' Peterson recalls.

They talked all night. Presley told her he was very spiritual and discussed numerology. She told him she was a virgin, ``which is pretty hard to believe when you're a showgirl. It just blew his mind. It was clear he was not going to, like, hit on me. I could kick myself now for telling him. It would be great to have him as my first lover. It's got to be somebody. It might as well be Elvis.''

As it was, all she got was a goodbye kiss, delivered when he deposited her in front of a room down the hall the next morning. Apparently he had taken over the entire floor. ``I was so busy thinking about Elvis kissing me that I don't remember how it was,'' she says.

But Peterson remembers almost everything else about that night. When the stories about Presley's drug use came out, she could hardly believe them.

``He was so anti-drug when I met him. I mentioned to him that I smoked marijuana, and he was just appalled. He said, `Don't ever do that again.' ''

Juanico also was surprised when she started hearing about her former boyfriend's drug abuse. ``He never drank or did drugs when I was around him,'' she says. Sometimes she thinks that if they had stayed together, she might have prevented him from becoming dependent on drugs.

``When Elvis died, I felt guilty. I've never been able to understand how he could be surrounded with so many people who supposedly loved him and yet they allowed him to do that to himself.''

But the drugged Elvis isn't the one Juanico chooses to remember. ``He was so young and sweet when I knew him. Most of all I remember his eyes. They were dark blue, but it wasn't the color that stood out, it was this dreamy look he would get. It was pretty irresistible.''

For years, she couldn't hear about his romances or listen to his songs because it was too painful. She remembered his singing ``Love Me Tender'' to her over the phone from California when he had just learned that he would be recording it.

He lives on in her memories, but Juanico is puzzled by why he has also lived on for so many other people.

``He's bigger now than he ever was. When my grandson was 3, he looked at a photo of him and said, `That's Elvis Presley.' My daughter laughed and said, `He could have been your grandpa.' ''

I agree dear FairyTale. :) This was really interesting to read. :) The only thing I'm wondering about is where it says that Elvis got involved with Ann after he proposed to Priscilla. :? I thought that he didn't propose to Cilla until around Christmas of 1966 which would mean that his relationship with Ann would have started prior to then right? :? Unless I'm mistaken which is always possible.  In any case, thank you so much sweet Lindsaygirl for posting this for us! :)
