Fire destroys legendary Hollywood recording studio

March 6, 2012 | 8:05 am

Investigators were still trying to determine Tuesday what caused a fire that destroyed most of a legendary Hollywood recording studio.

The Monday night fire destroyed the second floor of 1041 N. Orange Drive -– also known as 1041 Production Studios -– where legends like Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, the Beatles and the Beach Boys recorded hits.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott said the fire broke out around 7 p.m. and was knocked down by 72 firefighters in about 20 minutes. He said no one was injured, but the department contacted the Red Cross to aid displaced individuals and also dispatched animal services.

KTLA-TV reported that firefighters rescued a cat that had been unconscious from smoke inhalation, but firefighters were able to revive the animal.

Fire officials told KTLA-TV that the fire consumed about 85% of the building, which houses six recording studios.

Updates :

Fire at L.A's RCA Victor 'Radio Recorders' Studio: There are rumours of a major fire at RCA's famous Radio Recorders studios in LA - however updates note that the fire appears to have been actually in their annex studio at 1041 Orange Drive, across the alley from the original Radio Recorders studio at 7000 Santa Monica Boulevard which Elvis used.

Radio Recorders became famous in 1957 for being the Hollywood studio where Elvis recorded some of his greatest hits including the 'Jailhouse Rock' (Elvis right at the famous studio) and 'Loving You' sessions and through to the sixties including 'GI Blues' and the classic 'Blue Hawaii' with its number 1 smash hit singles. It would continue as the main studio for most of Elvis' west-coast Movie Soundtrack recordings until 'Double Trouble' in 1966.
Radio Recorders is now the headquarters of Studio 56.

It sure seems to be true, the statement that; All things old shall become new again..." They tear down the old and rebuild; in one case that I am familiar with is the recording studio in Hollywood where Elvis and others did some early 50's recordings was torn down and something else rebuilt. Also again when I went to
have some things done related to our book, well now it is a parking lot and even the little street that old building was located on is GONE! This was back in the 90's and after driving all over the area, around and around, it finally became clear
that like a big swipe of a giant dust cloth, the entire area had been "redesigned"
and plastered over! It was kind of an awful feeling that something that had stood and been used by so many could just vanish- I guess that is just "life"
because it seems to be happening to many things, all over the world. One day
if this world lasts, new people, perhaps from a country we've barely been aware of, will be building on top of "us and all our stuff". And think nothing of it!
Life goes on...only memories last-and that for as long as we do.
