I had heard about the town of Greensburg, Kansas being completely wiped out by a 1.7 mile wide F5 tornado on Friday. It was sad to hear, especially about the little boy searching for his parents, but when I saw the picture of the devastation, it was all that much more cutting. 95% of the town is destroyed.

Below is a link to the devastated town. It looks like something out of a Hollywood movie; only unfortunately this is reality. I recall a story that Tupelo was hit with a powereful tornado when Elvis was very young, and that he and his family narrowly missed it. Can't recall all the details though. Maybe if someone knows more of the story.

If anyone is curious as to what Tupelo looked like after the devastating 1936 tornado destroyed much of the city, see the below link, scrolling down a bit to the year 1936.

http://www.apt-finder.com/features_tupelo_history.htm

And here is a quote from the Almanac web site describing Elvis' connection with this tornado:

Quote:
When Elvis was two years old, reportedly, a tornado swept through his hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi, on April 5, 1936. The storm was devastating, destroying homes across the street from the Presleys', but they escaped unscathed. They say a Tupelo kitchen was blown, intact, to the town of Mooresville, seven miles away, and that the tornado sucked the feathers off Tupelo chickens. Tupelo lost 235 people in that tornado.
