My name is Mark. I am 35...as of the 27th of this month. I reside in Las vegas, and have since 1992. I came across this site and was very taken with it. Elvis has been in my life since late 1986. I am a Teachers aid by trade. Here is my story.
In 1986 I was a freshman in High School. I was picked on alot. I just didnt get along with anyone, nor did I seem to fit in. Along came this one individule. He also picked on me, but later befriended me. He said he wanted to know the real me. And so our friendship began. He was a rough type of guy. Even though we were friends he verbally and sometimes physically abused me. I know he felt bad and he would try to make it up to me. He was just a bully trying to grow up like any other high school kid. Anyhow, the day he befriended me, he invited me over to his house. I met his mother, and his dog. We then went up into his room. I will never forget what I saw. On the walls were Elvis photos. They were 70's concert shots. My reaction was something to the score of " Isnt Elvis dead?" Well abit later he said he was going to play a song for me and he wanted me to tell him who I thought the singer was. The song he played was "Way Down" Well I sat there and listened. He asked me when I thought the song came out. I said early 80's. He said nope that it was from 1977, and the singer...Elvis Presley. Now at the time all I knew about elvis was some of thoes over comercialised 50's songs like hound dog and the like. I was shocked and had him play it again. To this day, "Way down" remains my favorite upbeat song from Elvis.
Now something was changing. At the time I was listening to music of the day wich is now concidered classic rock and hard rock. Soon my friend made me three tapes. A 50's 60's and 70's tape of Elvis. I played the 70's tape first. I about wore that tape out. The other tapes I played but seemed to be more taken with the 70's stuff. I figured this because its closer to my gereration. In 1987, for my birthday my mother bought me four Elvis records. One of them was "Moody Blue". Actually I am playing the tape of the album now...an 8 Track...hay don't laugh...
My friend was quite angry that I had my own Elvis records as he wanted to control how fast I obtained my Elvis collection. It was stupid bu thats the way he was back then. Looking back I could have done without his friendship, but not the gift he gave me. The best gift anyone can give someone, the gift of Elvis Presley. My friend used to sing his Elvis records in front of me, and throw his own concerts..It was funny when I think back to it. In 1987 or 1988, in my own bedroom I started singing from my own Elvis collection. I have been singing his music since then. People around me say I am preaty good. I dont claim to be an impersonator, but I do like to wear his hair style and sideburns. I feel naked without my sideburns, funny huh.
Anyhow, Elvis means everything to me. I am most glued to the 70's as I stated earlier. I am particully glued to his last couple years. "From Elvis Presley Boulevard Memphis Tennesse" and "Moody Blue" are my favorite albums. If I said eveything I thought about this man I would have a very long post. So I will end with this... Elvis is a very big part of me. When I feel blue I listen to him, and I always cheer up. Its like he is here and he is saying.. " Hay man..dont let it get you down !" I will be posting in this forum alot I think. If ya'll don't see me for a bit, its because I have a busy scedule sometimes.

God Speed

Mark

Hey Mark, Welcome to ELC!

your story is great, please feel free to post here. Elvis has come into so many people's lives when they need him-even now it's happening more and more. I think we all need to have inspiration, a light in our lives and sometimes it comes in unusual and noncomforming ways. By that I mean, not the norm for many people who can't let even a little crack of their "inner door" show though they may lie awake nights wishing they could. Elvis opened doors-he still is and it's great! I am 65 but I love sideburns on guys and I always liked that hairstyle from the 50's era. It's back and I'm glad. I still notice the guys who wear it-at my age! But it's okay to look-I have been married 48 years to the same guy-black hair, brown eyes and yep, 50's style hair. But I am his barber-hee-hee, one way to keep it-huh.
Thanks for posting, and have a great week. Wanda

In awhile I will be retiring for the night. But before I do that, I wanted to say a couple things. I am sitting here listening to an Elvis tape. I have been doing that alot as of late.
Anyhow, Its sad that I was not around when I could have seen a real Elvis concert. When I got into Elvis, he had already been gone 10 years. Even though at the time I was listening to music of the time, I still had a foundation of older music. When I was a kid Mom and Dad had this great Hi-Fi Sterio. Us kids would love it when they would play different tapes and records. I remember hearing the likes of Mac Davis and The carpenters. They were my favorites.
Fast forwarding to 1987 when I got into Elvis, my musical taiste started to change. While I still like Classic rock, I noticed I listened to it far less. Along with Elvis I became impressed with other oldies including old country music such as the great Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty to name a few.
Elvis was a big gift you all are right. But there is alittle sadness in it too. Elvis will never release a new record, he will never be in concert. I will never get to see him, and see that magic that alot of you saw back then. Once in awhile I catch something I have never heard before. I get very excited hearing out takes of his music from the 70's. I have found alot of that on various music sites. it brings tears to my eyes sometimes. I just about jumped out of my chair when I heard the outtakes to "Way Down".
But like most of you, I believe Elvis is with us someway or another. And where ever he is, I am sure he misses us as much as we miss him.
I have heard alot of arguments over this site. I have read this on other sites. I have to say this, If what Ms Wanda said was not true I am sure there would be some problems. Including legal action. And since that has not happned well then there is your answer. People are ugly out there. I chose to believe what Ms Wanda says. I have no reason to not believe, it has not been proven otherwise to me.
People are very carefull of what they believe these days because of all the scams out there. There are plenty of men saying that they are Elvis's son for example. But Ms Wanda, you keep doing what you do, Some of us aprciate it.

Like Mark I feel very sad that I will never get to see Elvis. I became a fan in 1981, at age 11.
I often think that it is such a bad luck, just to have missed him by a few years. But on the other hand, I'm very glad he has left us with his beautiful music, his wonderful recordings. I believe that nothing meant more to him than his music. And that's what he left us with, the most precious gift he could have give us.
Moreover, we can be sure that he loved us ... loves us ... as we love him.

Thanks to all of you who have welcomed me to this forum. You are all meeting me at a very intersting time in my life. I was in the hotel casino buissness for many years. Now I am working for the school district here in town.
In the morning while on my motorcycle I like to listen to Elvis in my MP3 player. He sure helps me get through the morning.

Sincerely,

Mark

And so yesterday I was working P.E in a school. So I just wore my sweats and a Elvis T shirt. These kids were anywhere from Kindergarden to 3rd grade. Most of the kids were staring at my shirt. One kid said to me that he died on the toilet. Well that was sad for me to hear that this was all this kid knew about Elvis. And I am sure some person with limited brain power taught him this. Its a sad world we live in when all some people know is that he sung hound Dog and Died on the jon.
But then I have to remember that these are just kids. They only know what they are taught. But it was nice to see there interest in my shirt. Furthermore these kids dont get to see a guy like me to ofen. They do stare at me. I have the dark slicked back hair and sideburns that are getting bigger..I don't like shaving....

See ya all later

Mark
