Elvis - The Early Years

Postby Rainbow Light » Thu Mar 30, 2006 6:15 am

Has anyone seen a video/dvd of the above? Am only vaguely familiar with it - has an actor by the name of Jonathan Rhys Meyer as Elvis and is basically supposed to be the story of the early years of Elvis' life and career. I wasn't sure what to say and understand it's something to do with EPE?

Might be able to get a copy but was wondering if any of you had seen this and could give me an idea what it's like before I go spending money on it. And I'm never quite sure as far as these 'life stories' things go and with the people who play Elvis are concerned too - kind of curious y'know but then we all know curiosity killed the cat, so to speak so I'm erring on the cautious side!

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated?

Many thanks!

Read a lot of comments about that film.
I also would like to see it but the comments weren't that good I'm afraid.

Especially the Priscilla - actrice was BAD I've read.

But the part of Gladys was very good and it is filmed on location at Graceland.

Here in Belgium I doubt that we will ever have the chance to buy or see it so you are lucky you can buy it there in England.

I think it is time that there comes a high budget film on the life of Elvis. Something like I walk the line (johnny Cash) that would be so great.

I do not understand, we have Elvis the most charismatic singer the world ever witnessed and all we have is a outdated movie with Kurt Russell and the biographie of Priscilla Elvis and Me. And now that new mini serie that will probably never reach a great deal of fans

EPE give us a good movie about our Hero

Good movie about Elvis

Postby Wanda June Hill » Thu Mar 30, 2006 11:02 am

I wonder why no one has come up with a digital movie of Elvis-using drawings (good ones of course) like they do for all kinds of other things-games etc; and make the Elvis charactor really look like him, I mean really so, with the way he stood, walked, etc: and do his life story without using humans who will never be able to capture the real Elvis in living form. But it should be possible to do it the other way-just think of the possibilities-movies of all kinds-that hewould have liked to do-and his life story...they can do holograms too-wouldn't it be great to have that in your own home entertainment area and have a "virtual" live Elvis doing his show right there before you? I've thought that since seeing the "ghostly" holograms at Knottsberry Farm! If they can do that there-why not on a home unit? Even a small version would be great-anyway, I'd rather see a digital form of Elvis doing movies than watching some guy trying to fake it- The one series that Priscilla had something to do with-for television was pretty good-in spots there were questionable things-but all in all, the actor played the role well and it wasn't anything too horrible. I enjoyed some of it. Still, no living human being can truly capture Elvis no matter how hard they try. I don't like impersonators much, and don't watch them trying to do his talk, his movements and hands and lips-and smile-eck. Anyway,
I talk too much-I enjoy reading all you guy's comments and thoughts. It's just great-I haven't shared much at all since the beginning 1963 and this is nice-especially now at this time in my life. Thank you so much for being there for all of us'uns out here in "radio land". wjh

Wanda June,

I love to read your comments, really.

Wouldn't it be grat to have a Walt Disney picture about his life. Why don't they do that with the original music.

Did you like Elvis and me, the actress was great and resembled Priscilla so much but the Elvis character
well you will be in the best place to judge. In my opinion he didn't even came close to the real one. The charm, the eyes, that lovely laughter he just didn't have that.
In my opinion he was arrogant and not good looking. They exagerated with those sideburns. Elvis was awesome beautiful and it that film it looks like Elvis was ugly.

Then the story. Did he rape her, did he throw things at her. I do not believe that sorry. Elvis treated all the women in his life with respect. Saw last week a dvd from the ultimate Elvis.
All his former girlfriends had so many nice stories to tell about him and Priscilla wich was his big love would have been mistreated by him.

I have so many questions about that. There are so many lies. What do you think about that rape scene in Vegas.
Why would she tell things like that about the father of her child when it is not true.
What sort of women does that.

When I see EBTP there she is full of that good man he was etc etc...
No word about the rape ever again. What can we still believe about her.

Oh my God, that Priscilla srives me nuts, I have so many mixed feelings about her. Wish I could interview her. With no restrictions.

I really would like to know the truth finally

Yeah, this idea sure has a lot of possibilities and potential, another outlook on ELVIS in the 21st century and how technology has come so far forward to be able to do such things - now if only we could convince EPE of that, huh?!! Would be fantastic to see though and at least then we'd have THE ORIGINAL!

If I'm honest, I don't have time for impersonators. I leave those who like them to get on with seeing their shows but no thanks! Unfortunately, what puts me off most of all is the press and the documentaries where the worst of them (who are more an insult to his memory, think you know the type I mean?!) all get the attention, this also includes some of the wackier fringe fans like the 'Elvis wart' lady - Ewwww!

Pris and her story...

Postby Wanda June Hill » Thu Mar 30, 2006 3:32 pm

I didn't like the guy playing Elvis in her tv movie. He is good in other roles but that overgrown lamb chop thing on the sides of his face, the sleazy way he portrayed him and I have to say, he was right up there with Don Johnson in "ugly Elvis" roles. We have to remember that what Pris remembers is through the eyes and emotional maturity of a 14 year old child-an Air Force "brat" who didn't have much experience in the "real world" herself. She didn't have a clue about Elvis' past, his childhood, the things he had been through, or his career... and when I read her book I couldn't get over how she STILL was seeing him through those same young, inexperienced and childishly selfish eyes-it floored me. I think now she has grown up some, and can see him differently but she'll never really have a clear view-not after all this time and all the things that have come and gone for her and for him. It was as he said fate. He thought he'd been with her in the past and that he might have to be again-because they didn't settle it...that was his feeling...it wasn't settled yet. As for the scene in Vegas when he called her to him-and he did that...sent for her after Lisa told him and he stewed over it. He said that she told him he didn't want her like he used to, didn't love her, wasn't man enough, rough enough and that it wasn't his fault-he was just like that-
and it made him angry- he said, "I treated her mean-an' she cried. What the hell does she want from me? Nothin' I do is good enough-why is this happenin' now?"
I wrote more in the book-I didn't say everything he did-but enough that I think it will help explain how he felt and what happened-which is a little different than her version in her book. But no one sees things the same way-and in her eyes, and Elvis did agree to this too, that he had neglected her, beenn too busy for her and she deserved to have a husband who would be there for her when she needed him, who would put her first and he said, I just didn't see it comin' and I lost her. It was my fault, all of it." I don't agree to that entirely, but that's his take on it. They were both at fault-but in the end they did handle it pretty well and Lisa had the best of both. Elvis tried, it was all he could do-that career was too big for both of them and no one else could have handled it any better, I don't think, not under the circumstances-Elvis was the first one-the only one-from then on were groups...he said it so well, "I'm out there on my own-if I - I didn't have my group, the band and all out there...I couldn't do it...man, I'd just-jus' curl up an hide somewhere. Man, it'd be be way more 'n I could handle...out there alone-" He thought comedians were something-because they were "out there alone-with nobody...just them and that black hole of of living bodies 'n you can't see them once the lights hit - you just feel 'em...un God...it's a a like a livin' thing comin' at you in waves...powerful and man, I love it...love that feellin' it's like-like fear you never felt before...then its like bein' loved, wraped up an' held in lovin' arms or somethin'...hell, it's not sexual...it's different...can't explain it...just have to feel it...lord, I used to dream about it...doin' movies...then couldn't feel it an it was kinda like bein' or doin' without sugar or some drug or somethin'....guess it is an addiction an' man, I'm hooked good! Can't wait to get out there-"wjh

It was so possible to tell from the way Elvis just went out there on the stage that he got so hooked up in the performance, the special rapport he had with the audience that he just loved what he was doing!

But I would say, more than that, specially between the fans and himself, this strong power/force of love that transferred from one to the other. There were times that he just seemed so vulnerable and painfully insecure that you can understand how he would have needed that and almost be addicted to the feeling/experience, to know he was loved - not in a sexual way but for who he was specially when there were many around him in his life that would sell him down the river in a shot if they thought they could make a quick buck from it!
