Jere Walker
Jere worked with Elvis for two years as a security guard at the Sahara.
One time we were coming down the elevator to the stage from the 14th floor of the Sahara. We were all on the elevator, 10 to 12 people and we started down. Dick Grob, Red West, Dave Hebler, Lamar Fike, Joe Esposito, Elvis and several other guys cutting it close to the performance to get Elvis to the dressing room in time to get him on stage and the elevator stalled on mid-floor. Time was passing. Lamar was claustrophobic and paranoid and Elvis was cracking jokes and having fun with the situation. Something had to be done so I grabbed the door, braced myself and pulled. The elevator door opened; I had snapped the hook but there was just enough room to crawl underneath. There we were crawling out and there was Elvis in his jumpsuit, cracking up, crawling out of that small space. He was the greatest.
