He sure was that. It would have been great to know him back then-or at least have seen him! He was in Tulsa but my folks would not let me go-my aunt went and had a ticket for me but... She thought he was wonderful and didn't find him vulgar at all! She was 28 and very attractive lady and she said she waited at the hotel where he was staying and he didn't get back there until after midnight-he had been giving press time and signing autographs. She didn't get to meet him but she was in the small crowd inside that got to look at him and listen tohim talking. She said he was polite, friendly and so tired out his hands were trembling and his face was pale and drawn- he told them finally he had to go and "get some rest and eat because he hadn't had anything to eat since breakfast in Oklahoma City. Immediately the man who owned a little cafe down the street said what do you like to eat-Elvis told him and the guy said I'll bring it right over for you Elvis-on the house! And Elvis said thank you sir, that would be very nice-the hotel kitchen is closed now and I was going to have to send out for food. You're a God-send sir, thank you! My Aunt remembered what he said because she was writing down comments and things in shorthand so she could write a story for the local newspaper-she was a freelance writer in her "spare" time. That's probably why I talk so much when I write-spent a lot of time with her!
Elvis was a blonde then-light sandy brown hair she said.
She was always trying to get me to like him and to get me interested in that "evil music". Boy, what I missed!!
Guess though, it all got made up for when he came into our lives... and brought light and happiness like no one on earth ever did before. One thing I remember very well was my aunt carrying the newspaper into the office she managed (and ended up owning) where I worked on weekends in the summers while in highschool-file clerking- the paper had a full page black and white shot of Elvis' face kind of side view-and she showed all of us females and said,
'Just look at the sweetness, the innocence in that little boy's face-there's no devil in there!" She was right-in many ways.wjh
