Gina, I too did not care for Careless Love. The loving giving side of Elvis is not reflected well and if one is not aware of Elvis' motives in during certain things, then he comes off sounding strange.
However, Guralnick's first book, The Last Train to Memphis, is much better and I would recommend that one.

Some of the above books are out of print but can still be gotten used. I've only been an Elvis fan for a few years, so there are still many books which I haven't read. No doubt others will be able to add some more suggestions. I have heard (though haven't yet read) that the recently released book by Jerry Schilling, entitled "Me and a Guy Named Elvis" is another good one.
My guess is that "The Gospel Side of Elvis" by Joe Moscheo (released a few weeks ago) will be good, though I haven't read it yet. I've seen Joe speak on the "He Touched Me" dvd's & in the "Elvis Lives 25th Aniversary" DVD and he comes across to me as someone who really cared about & wishes to honor Elvis. His book speaks about Elvis' spiritual side, which is an oft neglected topic in many books about Elvis. It usually is quickly brushed over, thereby not giving a full picture of Elvis' heart and soul.

It behooves one to sense God as dwelling within each of us, rather than as some distant entity, far above and seemingly beyond our reach.
