Black Velvet - Alannah Myles

Postby Trezyours » Sat Feb 02, 2008 9:31 pm

Where have I been??? I have always loved the song Black Velvet by Alannah Myles and even have the CD yet I never realised until today that the song was a dedication to Elvis. It really is lovely.
Have a look at this lovely tribute on You Tube:

These are the words:

Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high
Mama's dancin' with baby on her shoulder
The sun is settin' like molasses in the sky
The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Up in Memphis the music's like a heatwave
White lightening, bound to drive you wild
Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl
"Love me tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Every word of every song that he sang was for you
In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon, what could you do?

(Guitar Solo)

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

If you please, if you please, if you please

Sorry if this has been posted about before! I am a bit slow LOL

I love that song and her voice, the emotional way she sings it for him.
He would also have loved hearing it-but I'm sure he knows now. It was pretty popular and still gets played around his birthday on some radio shows. I really like that dark haired girl who plays the piano and sings his songs...she does them really bluesy and he'd love that too.
Thanks for posting the poem/lyrics and best of luck and good wishes.wjh

you feel the Memphis heat, the typical atmosphere in it
A star burned too brightly, burned out too quickly and we were left with the afterglow which has never dimmed."
