1. Outline God's plan of salvation. 2. List the characteristics of God revealed in this plan.
Summary and notes - Selwyn Hughes
We are meditating on the fact that, of the names of God used so far in the book of Genesis, the most revealing, so I believe, is that of Jehovah Jireh - the Lord will provide. In the title Jehovah Elohim we saw God giving Himself to His human creation by breathing into Adam the breath of life. Here, however, in the title Jehovah Jireh, and the cirumstances out of which the name arose, the implication is this: God is willing to do more than give Himself to His creation - He is prepared to give Himself for it. Quietly but purposefully God is revealing through His names that He is not just interested in giving ifts to His people; He is prepared to go to the utmost lengths when necessary and give Himself.
Out of this fact comes a hint as to why man was created in the first place. I have often wondered, and doubtless you have, too, why God dared to create man and to create him free. To make man free meant that God had to somewhat limit Himself. He had to step back and allow a free human will to operate. He could not coerce it for if He did then the will would not be free. Suppose that will would go wrong - it would break the human heart and God's heart, too, for God would have to live alongside that rebellioius, straying human will and still love.
But God took the risk on one condition. Anything that fell on man would fall on Him. Speaking of Christ, Paul tells us, 'God made him who had no sin to be sin for us' (2 Cor. 5:21). All love has the desire to make the sins and sorrows of the one it loves its very own And here, in the unfolding of the name Jehovah Jireh, that most incredible and most glorious truth is beginning to be revealed.
Prayer: O God my Father, as I consider the love that went into the making of man my heart overflows with gratitude. The love that would take such risks and carry its purpose through must inevitably face a cross. Such love has won me for ever. Amen.
